Durham University and Hatfield MCR strive to be safe and inclusive communities for everyone. However, we recognise that members of our community may unfortunately experience behaviour that is intimidating, discriminatory, or harmful.
If you experience or witness behaviour such as harassment, bullying, discrimination, intimidation, or violence, we encourage you to report it. Speaking up helps ensure that concerns are addressed appropriately and helps make our community safer for everyone.
Please know that your concerns will be taken seriously and you will be listened to. There are several ways to seek support or report incidents across the College, the University, and beyond.
Within Hatfield College
College staff encourage students to come forward if they experience or witness any concerning behaviour so that it can be addressed promptly. Hatfield’s Student Support team can provide guidance and signposting to appropriate University services.
You may also contact senior college staff directly if you would like assistance:
Vice-Master: James Armitage – hatfield.vicemaster@durham.ac.uk
Assistant Master: Lucy Bush – hatfield.assistantmaster@durham.ac.uk
Within the MCR, you can also speak with a trained peer support officer in a confidential and supportive environment.
You can contact the MCR President at hatfield.mcrpresident@durham.ac.uk to discuss any concerns.
Please note that MCR Welfare Officers and peer supporters are primarily trained to listen and signpost students to appropriate professional services, rather than provide specialised counselling support.
Reporting to the University
Incidents can also be reported directly to Durham University through the Report + Support service.
This service allows students to report incidents either anonymously or with their contact details, and reports are handled confidentially. The University will consider each report carefully and provide appropriate follow-up or support.
Durham Students’ Union
The Durham Students’ Union also provides advice and support services for students who need guidance about reporting concerns, understanding their options, or accessing support.
Nightline
Durham Nightline is a confidential listening service run by trained student volunteers. It provides a non-judgemental space to talk, particularly outside normal support hours.
Police and Off-Campus Support
If you experience a serious incident or are in immediate danger, you should contact the police.
Emergency: Call 999
Non-emergency: Call 101
You can also report incidents online via the local police service:
https://www.durham.police.uk/Home.aspx
We hope that no one needs to use these services, but we want every member of our community to feel safe and supported during their time at Hatfield.
If you have any questions or would like further guidance, please contact the MCR Welfare team or the College Student Support office.
