Durham University and Hatfield MCR strives to be a safe and inclusive place for all people. However, we recognise that people might have unfortunately faced unpleasant behaviour from malicious individuals.

We want to encourage anyone who has faced intimidation (verbal or physical) or violent behaviour that is discriminatory or generally aggressive and harmful to come forward and report offenders so appropriate action can be taken on malicious actors. Please do not feel that you will not be heard.

There are several processes and spaces in-place across campus to ensure your concerns will be addressed appropriately.

We want to emphasise that the College does not tolerate violence, bullying, harassment, intimidation or misdemeanours that cause harm to others.

Further, we want to share ways for any victims or active bystanders to come forward to report such behaviour to make college and University a safer space than ever before.

In College

The College Officers encourage students to come forward to report any incidents so they can be addressed immediately. College Student Support can offer relevant signposting information to appropriate services on-campus.

You can also contact the Vice Master James Armitage (hatfield.vicemaster@durham.ac.uk) or Assistant Master Lucy Bush (hatfield.assistantmaster@durham.ac.uk) if you need further assistance.

As a part of the MCR, we also offer the opportunity to have conversations with a training peer support officer in a safe space. You can contact our President Amy at hatfield.mcrpresident@durham.ac.uk to talk about any concerns you have. Please note, the Welfare Officers are trained primarily to signpost you to appropriate support. Though they are trained to listen to you, they will not be able to give you specialised support.

In University

You can also report any incidents directly to the University on the Report and Support service. You can use this service to either report incidents anonymously or openly. This is a confidential reporting service and your report will be investigated with greatest individual consideration. No reports of violence, bullying and harassment of any kind will be ignored.

Students Union

The Durham Students Union also offer information and support to students.

Nightline

The Durham Nightline service can also be a source of emergency support. Run by anonymous trained volunteers, Nightline offers a listening service.

Off-Campus/Police

In cases of emergencies or serious incidents, you can also report directly to the Police. This is the website of the local police:https://www.durham.police.uk/Home.aspx. You can either report on their online reporting service or call 999 in case of emergency and 101 in case of non-emergencies.

Further Information

While we hope no one needs to use these services, we want all students to remain safe and protected during their time at Hatfield. Please don't hesitate to get in touch with the MCR Welfare or College Student Support for further information.
