What is MCR Welfare?

Welfare is a student-led support service providing a listening ear through drop-ins (which run approximately once a week during term time), as well as providing signposting to the support that is available to you within college, the university and elsewhere in Durham.

We also aim to raise awareness around mental health and other issues that you may face during your time at Durham.

As members of the MCR, feel free to contact us email: hatfield.mcrwelfare@durham.ac.ukare@durham

What are Drop-Ins?

Drop-ins are a space for any student to have a confidential*, non-judgemental and non-advisory chat with a trained student welfare officer. Everyone is welcome, whether you just want a chat, need signposting, have something on your mind, or just simply fancy a cup of tea and some biscuits!! You can also collect supplies such as condoms, sanitary items, pregnancy tests and earplugs.

(Drop In Hours will be advertised here during term time.)*

DISCLAIMER:

Welfare Officers are not counsellors, we are simply here to listen to you and help work through your problems. We might not always be able to discuss something with you that may make us feel uncomfortable. If this is the case, we will suggest other resources or support you can seek. We encourage you to respect our boundaries by avoiding contacting us personally where possible. If you require help outside of drop-in hours, you can contact us or College Student Support staff via email. (Our welfare email address is hatfield.mcrwelfare@durham.ac.uk.)

If you need urgent help, call the porters who will put you in contact with the on-call College Officer. Always call 999 in emergencies.

*We will not discuss anything talked about during a drop-in or sent to us via email with anyone unless we feel that there is a risk of harm to yourself or others, or if we receive your consent to do so. Under such circumstances, we will pass this information on to the relevant party. We can never promise full confidentiality, even if you wish us to do so, because we are legally obliged to provide a duty of care to you.
